I could talk your ears off on Vespas and Lambrettas (write your eyes
off?) At any rate, in the US, a Vespa will be easier to find than a
Lambretta. The biggest downside to Italian scooters is that their
esthetics tend to vary inversely with their reliability. Anyway, I've done
a web page on the Vespa models that I consider the best of the breed:
http://piston-ported.netfirms.com/
and an excellent resource for info is the scooterist BBS here:
http://www.scooterbbs.com/

In my opinion, when looking for a Vespa, the best bet is to stay within the
years 1959 to 1972 and a mechanically complete basket case is generally
preferable to a runner with missing/irreparable bodywork. With Lambrettas,
any 125cc or greater made after 1962 is the way to go.

cheers,
