ALFA75 starter motor noises

Fellow alfisti,

In the last few weeks when I have prised the Twin Spark away from
the wife, the starter has been sounding like an air starter for
an F1 car.  While this was novel for a while, I am now supicious
that the speed it turns the engine could actually be lower, and
just noisier.

Has anyone had experience with 4 cylinder starter motors doing
this?  Should I be on the lookout for a new starter motor?

Perhaps it is a lubrication problem in the ring gear?
