164 Catalytic Converter

My 91 164S is running poorly and producing a high pitch wheezing sound on 
acceleration and deceleration. Fuel consumption up.  The computer was 
generating an error code (1224) that pointed to the O2 sensor. Changed 
sensor with no apparent effect.  With a 130K on the clock, could the cat be 
starting to clogged up somehow?  'Had a Merkur with a converter that became 
so bad that the car would not run - similar to sticking a potato in the 
tailpipe.  Anyone with similar experience on suggestion on testing the cat 
theory?
