Where does this go?

Hi all,
I tore apart the 2L engine from one of my 73 Berlina's to begin a rebuild 
(may take a while). When removing the front cover a small metal piece fell 
out and I'm clueless where it goes. Its about 3/4 " tall by 1/2 " wide and  
about 200 mils thick with tapered edges on 2 of the 4 sides and a hole in the 
middle. Can't seem to figure out where it goes or what it does. Please help, 
I've got some pics I can send if someone isn't sure from my description.
