Superchargers, EFI, & Twin Sparks



In #1032 Ted Spradley admits he's not terribly knowledgeable regarding
superchargers, and asks:
"Anyone know if an Eaton M45 would run OK upside down?  Normally, the
input is in the back and the output is straight down, but I'm thinking
straight up.  Then, the place to mount it would be where the Spica pump
used to be, then you'd have to "twist" the EFI intake manifold to take
it's input from the bottom.  Not much room for an intercooler.

turn to Fig. 1-16, pg. 8 (Gran Sport 6C1750).

(When in doubt, make it up as you go). I personally can't see why a
supercharger couldn't be mounted upside down, except...I assume there
are mounting points on the blower, and might turn out to be on the wrong
side.

Don't believe you want to go without an intercooler. Go to
http://www.alfacybersite.com/ACSSupercharged4-cylinder.html. First
you'll see the air box type water-to-air intercooler Jim designed and
fabricated along with his comments regarding the subject. Possibly
something like this could be made to 'blow from the bottom'.

I personally think it's a great idea if it could be pulled off. It would
not only have the neat retro connotations you're looking for, but would
no doubt be more efficient because of the virtually direct connection to
the inlet manifold. 'Twould be a bit busy on that side of the engine.

Oh, another neat thing, you wouldn't have the extra heat of the exhaust
manifold next to the blower.

I'll add Jim Steck to the mailing of this to see if he cares to comment.
It is possible he might say, "Enough already Biba!"
