Brake fluids

Just a quick question about brake fluid compatability,    if I have a
older Italian car with its brake system currently filled with silicone
brake fluid,  which DOT fluid might be compatibile,  a DOT4 or a DOT 5, 
or would I have to stick with the silicone fluid?

Also,  if I wanted to flush the silicone fluid out and replace with a
typical DOT 3 fluid,  what procedure would I use?
