Re: Shankle Quadraflow

I asked the same question about the oil separator hose.
I put the Quadraflows on for the intake sound. After awhile,
when I get tired of it or when I go on a long trip, I put the
stock air box back on.
When I'm using the Quadraflows, I have an 8" length of hose
connected to the oil separator pointing down towards the ground.
I clean that part of the engine compartment every once in a
while. It isn't that much oil, but there is a droning noise at
idle that is somewhat annoying. I don't hear it when driving,
just a very loud intake and exhaust sounds.
With the Spica box, the hose at the bottom of the oil
separator goes back to the box to burn gases from the engine, I
think. I have also seen crankcase vent filters connected directly
to the valve cover pipe.
Maybe because of the thickness of my ass, I can't tell much
seat of the pants difference. I have read many times that Spica
box the best design. When I drive with the Quadraflows I know
they look good and are noisy (good) but the stock air box is
better... it's probably emotional.

Here's what a few Digesters wrote to me (I hope it's OK to quote
them):

Joe Martin Cantrell wrote:

"Nope. With the Shankles, it has nothing to plug into." and
also: "My car developed a miss under part throttle acceleration
with the SPICA box on, but it went away with the K&N's. So, I'm
running the Quadraflows now, too.
I might not put the top up for a while in this weather, and
the noise is
Alfa noise. I'm not complaining!"

"For a while I had nothing connected but a short (3") hose. I
did get a little (very
little) seepage of oily liquid form the end of the hose every now
and then.
What I did a few months back was, I went to my local speed
shop and got a small K&N filter (looks almost like an valve cover
breather on a V-8) that fits the end of my hose (w/ hose clamp).
They didn't have the right size in stock but ordered it based on
the ID my hose.
Not that it makes much of a difference ... just looks more
finished ... "cooler".
If needed I can snap a digital picture or even dig for my
receipt (I keep them all on a ~big~ pile) and give you the K&N
part #."

"If you are interested in the K&N replacement filter for the

here is a copy of an e-mail I wrote a while back:
Well, guys, the elusive filter replacements for the Spica GTV air
box finally
surfaced.
I went to K&N today, in Riverside, Ca, and it is true, they
still make them.
Read on.
About a month ago I bought a pair of used K&N original (read
older) filter
elements, thanks to somebody's tip of their presence in e-bay. I
love the
Alfa Digest. Got the filters, measured them, looked at their
embedded
numbers. E-mailed K&N and the response was: the air filter for
your model
car (Spica 74 GTV) is no longer available. Called them, and they
told me to
search their web site for either cross reference numbers or to
look by size.
Both gave negative results. The size is not listed.
So today I went, the place is huge, looks like a corporate
place and you see
nothing more than the lobby. A very gentle lady came out to help
me, I
showed her my (filter) element, she took it inside, got a cross
reference
with their current production, even took the measurements to
double check,
and yes, THEY STILL MAKE IT! It's even listed for the Alfa. But
it's
actually a "universal" filter. I was so happy I wanted to tell
her she made
my day. And here it goes:

K&N part number # E-2040
Ext diam: (A) 3.500
Int diam: (B) 2.430
length: (H) 6.620

I assume inches. They had 4-6 in stock, but they were going
to a dealer
called Truck Parts East (434) 978-1141, and they had a few more
ordered, so
the production will probably run soon. Retail is $ 39.96 each
They can also be ordered from J&M Speed Center in Riverside, CA,
for $ 24.95
each, and you need two (need I say?). Ask for Steve. No
connection, except
a satisfied customer. Or call your own K&N supplier."
