2002 Tii Overheating??

Has anyone out there had any experience with temp gauges misreading ??? My
mechanic says the car is NOT overheating but the gauge consistently runs at a
hair below the RED! It makes me nervous to drive but shows no indications of
overheating. (no fluid leak / boiling out noise etc. ) What procedure should I
go through to find out what the problem is or rule out everything else.
Mechanic says he has seen / owned some that consistanly read just below the
red and he has to just accept it.
