Curt,

The dowel pins were clearly put there by IH for a reason and I doubt ease
of installation was the primary reason... just my guess though.  Rather, I
think the dowel pins insure proper *alignment* of the bell housing to the
block.  However, now that you have everything buttoned up nice and tight, I
wouldn't go back and drop the tranny  just to put them back in.  If you're
*sure* you've properly torqued down the tranny to block mounting bolts,
then I'd just save the dowel pins until the next time you have the tranny
removed.
