Pete, i have an off-road manual from 1975, put out by Bob Waar. it includes
a section on some really good applications for the Hi-Lift jack (he calls it
a "sheepherder's jack"). there are even some pictures of the thing being
applied in the manner described. one of those applications is as a winch.
in the pictures, it's doing quite a good job at the task, too.

in fact, there are a pair of pictures of the Hi-Lift being used to get a
Scout II off of an embankment, where it's hung up pretty nastily. there are
a number of IH Scout 80/800 and II pictures throughout the book, including
one of a Scout II getting sideways down a fairly steep hill. that's the
mandatory IH content, naturally. +)

if you'd like me to send you digital pictures of that section of this book,
or even scans of it, let me know, and i'll get them off to you right away.
the rest of the book is actually very useful too, and unfortunately i
believe it's out of print now. it also has stuff in it from Dick Cepek and
Vic Hickey, to accompany Bob Waar's commentary. come on, you old-timers,
chip in here and tell everybody who those three jokers are.
