Autocrossing (known as Solo II when sanctioned by the SCCA) is one of the true grassroots motorsports. It is a skills contest involving a single car against the clock rather than true wheel-to-wheel racing. This makes one of the safest and least expensive motorsports. At the lower levels you can run your street car for just entry fees and some additional wear on your tires. Even at more competitive levels it only costs a few hundred dollars for the additional tires and wheels needed for a whole season of racing. SIR's entry fees are $10 for members, $15 for non-members. This usually entitles you to about 4 runs.
An Autocross is typically a run against the clock involving a single car following a course laid out on a parking lot with orange construction cones. The course will normally have lots of twist and turns as well as things like slaloms and offsets. Speeds will rarely get over 60-70mph, and most of the course is actually done at speeds of more like 30-40mph. This sounds slow, but don't believe it. To post a good time you have to push your car (and yourself) out to the limit. You're literally sliding through a lot of the turns! On an average course runs are 30-40 seconds, depending on the cars class and the drivers skill. The interesting fact is that at an Autocross you will face corners about twice as fast as a leading F-1 driver on a record lap. Yep, we go slower, but we turn a heck of a lot more.
