1961 Scout 80 with Cab top

I traded the 80 with my father-in-law, Jeff Burkes in September for the 800A.  It's going to be in better hands for sure.  His father owned an IH dealership in Texas and sold it in the mid-'60s.  A bit of historical connection.   But, since he doesn't have a website yet, I'll be keeping these pages up.

Except for the occasional drive around town, this vehicle was only driven on the beach by the previous owner.  It was flat-towed to the Outer Banks for beach driving, but was garaged the rest of the year.  When I bought it, the engine had 1315xx miles on it.  Through the registration tickets I've found, I know of four different owners in the past 15 years. It was originally a light metallic blue. In the deal, we also got a '62 parts truck with a full Travel Top and working drive train except for a bent pushrod in the 152ci engine. The previous owner had used the good parts from the '62 to repair the few bad spots on this one.  He then had it painted, including the stripe.

We rebuilt the slave cylinder on the clutch in August 98.  I blew it driving downtown in the middle of traffic. Considering I know almost nothing about engine work, I'm learning a lot.  My first purchase was the service manual.  I highly recommend getting one if you have a Scout.  I got mine from Super Scout Specialists.  With the help of the manual and my "Pit Crew", I was able to get the slave cylinder rebuilt and put back on.  I also had to put a new muffler on for inspection.  Otherwise, it's been great!

Christmas '98, I gave Jeff a tailgate for the Scout.  It had mostly surface rust, but was in good shape otherwise. With some sanding, priming and repainting, it was as good as new. Also, the wheels in the picture above were put on the 800A, so Jeff could put on original style tires.

In April 99, I was fortunate enough to be able to show this Scout at the 1999 DIHxie Regionals in Charlotte.  We won First in Class for Scouts (80/800).  Later in the year, we took this Scout to the IH Nationals in Springfield, OH.  It was simply amazing seeing that many Scouts in one place.  Jeff showed the Scout this time and won First Place in his class.
